Vintage French Woodland Oil Painting

We found this original painting during our latest buying trip through Northern France and were immediately drawn to its warm colours and the perspective of the long avenue of trees disappearing into the distance.

The scene captures what looks to be an autumn woodland walk beside a lake or river, with tall trees forming a natural tunnel along the pathway. The artist has used loose, layered brushwork throughout, particularly through the foliage, where greens mix with burnt orange, yellow and earthy brown.

There's a lovely contrast between the dense woodland on one side and the open stretch of pale blue water on the other. The small opening of light at the end of the path draws your eye right through the painting and gives it a real sense of depth.

Painted on board and left unframed, it's a lovely size for displaying just as we've shown it – propped on a shelf, dresser or kitchen worktop – or it could easily be framed and hung as part of a collection of original artwork.

Good vintage condition with the expected signs of age and previous display. There is some wear around the edges of the board, which we have left exactly as found.

It's the view down that tree-lined path that makes this one for us. The warm, slightly faded autumn colours and glimpse of water feel very French countryside, and it's one of those little paintings that's incredibly easy to find a spot for.
