Vintage French enamel lunch tins, with cream and green splatter enamel & original wire carry handles. Both retain their sealed lids and are presented in remarkably well-preserved condition, making them as useful today as they are decorative. Originally designed for carrying food and provisions, but now look great styled on a kitchen shelf for storing tea bags, stock cubes or small pantry essentials, place one beside the sink for washing-up brushes, sponges and soap, or use in a bathroom for toothbrushes and everyday toiletries. The speckled enamel finish and printed French label that remains on the one side of the green one, give them plenty of visual interest, while their neat proportions make them easy to incorporate into any space. More About This Piece

Enamelware became a mainstay of European kitchens during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, providing a hard-wearing and easily cleaned surface for everyday household vessels. Large handled jugs like this were used for carrying, storing and serving liquids including milk and water.

What sets this one apart is its finish. Rather than the more familiar plain white or blue enamel, the surface has a loose green and white marbled pattern running across the entire body and handle. At more than 100 years old, it has also survived remarkably well, particularly considering that these were made to be used rather than kept for display.

Condition

Exceptional condition for its age. There are minor signs of wear, small marks and areas of enamel loss consistent with a piece of French enamelware over 100 years old, but overall it has survived remarkably well. Please study the photographs as these form part of the condition description.

Why We Love It

The green marbled finish is brilliant and not something we come across very often. Add the exaggerated handle, tall shape and the fact that it has survived more than a century in this condition and it was an easy one for us. We'd fill it with a big bunch of garden flowers or a few oversized branches.
