A beautiful Oak French jardinière stand with a tall bobbin-turned pedestal, circular top and substantial round base. Originally intended as a plant stand, its height and proportions also make it a brilliant little side table – particularly beside an armchair or sofa where you want somewhere for a drink or lamp without taking up too much floor space.

More about this piece

Hand sourced by us in France, this is one of those pieces that can easily find a place in a modern home despite its traditional origins.

The tall central pedestal has a wonderful repeated bobbin-turned profile, rising from a wide circular foot to a round wooden top. The top has concentric turned detailing, echoed again in the base, and the warm wood has plenty of variation from age and use.

Traditionally this style of pedestal would have been used as a jardinière or plant stand, lifting a pot or trailing plant away from the floor. We think it's equally good repurposed as a small occasional table. Its narrow footprint makes it especially useful tucked beside an armchair, at the end of a sofa or in an awkward corner where a conventional side table would feel too bulky.

It would, of course, still look rather good with a big old French pot and plenty of greenery on top.

Condition

Good vintage condition with the knocks, marks and variations in tone expected from an older piece. The top shows some historic movement and separation within the timber, visible in the photographs, but this forms part of the piece's aged appearance.

Why we love it

That bobbin pedestal is the star. It gives what is essentially a very simple little table a brilliant silhouette, while the small footprint makes it incredibly easy to place. We'd happily use this next to a favourite chair with a lamp or pot on top.
