An old French stoneware bottle with a tall cylindrical body, narrow pouring neck and small loop handle, finished in a warm brown glaze. Bottles of this type were practical household and agricultural vessels used for storing and serving liquids, including cider, beer and other drinks, particularly before glass bottles became inexpensive and widely available. The simple elongated shape and earthy brown surface make this a really good piece of old French pottery to display today, either standing alone, grouped with other stoneware or used as a vase for a few tall stems from the garden.

More About This Piece

Before mass-produced glass bottles became commonplace, hard-fired stoneware was widely used across France and elsewhere in Europe for bottles intended to hold liquids. Its dense body and glazed surface made it particularly suitable for drinks, oils and other liquids, while the narrow neck helped with pouring and could be sealed with a cork or stopper.

Cider was certainly among the drinks stored and served from stoneware bottles, particularly in cider-producing regions, although without knowing where this particular bottle was made or finding an identifying mark, we wouldn't claim cider as its definite original contents.

The small handle beside the neck is a particularly nice detail and would have made the bottle easier to carry and pour.

Condition

Good used condition with marks, glaze variations, small surface losses and general wear from age and previous use. Please study the photographs as these form part of the condition description.

Why We Love It

We like how tall and narrow this one is. The warm brown glaze and little handle are enough without any decoration, and it looks particularly good mixed with baskets, old kitchen pottery and natural wood. We'd probably add one or two tall branches and use it as a vase.
