An lovely wooden trug with a simple tapered shape, metal carrying handle and a wonderfully worn pale finish. Made as a practical working piece, it’s still ready to be put to use today, whether carrying tools and cuttings around the garden, gathering vegetables from the allotment or sitting in the potting shed filled with gardening bits. Indoors, its generous size makes it equally useful for storing vegetables in the kitchen, rolled towels in a bathroom or everyday odds and ends. The wood has faded into lovely soft neutral tones with knocks, marks and wear from years of use. This has been cleaned and had a fresh coat of wax in our workshop ready for use.

More About This Piece

Trugs were made as working containers rather than decorative objects, used for carrying produce, tools, flowers and whatever else needed moving around the garden or farm. The wide open top makes everything easy to get at, while the tapered sides and high metal handle allow it to be carried comfortably.

This one has clearly seen plenty of use, and that is exactly how we like them. The timber has worn and faded unevenly, leaving a mix of pale natural wood, deeper brown areas, old nail heads and surface marks. It works just as well filled with vegetables in a kitchen as it does with secateurs and string in the potting shed.

Condition

Good solid used condition with considerable cosmetic wear from age and previous use. There are knocks, scratches, marks, colour variation and wear throughout the timber, along with ageing and surface oxidation to the metal handle. These are all part of the existing worn finish. Please study the photographs as these form part of the condition description.

Why We Love It

The pale, worn wood against that old metal handle is a really good combination. Nothing has been made to look rustic here — it has simply got there through years of use. Better still, it remains a genuinely useful bit of storage wherever you put it.
