Reclaimed Indian Wooden Chapati Boards
Reclaimed Indian Wooden Chapati Boards
Traditional Indian wooden chakla boards, each with a beautifully worn surface, rounded shape and short raised feet. Perfect beside the cooker for keeping olive oil, salt, pepper and everyday cooking essentials together, or next to the kitchen or bathroom sink for soap, brushes and hand wash. They also make lovely little serving platforms for cheese, bread, tapas or nibbles. Originally used for rolling out chapati and other Indian flatbreads, these solid wooden boards have years of marks, knocks and variations in the timber from their previous use. Each board is slightly different in size, shape and finish, so choose your favourite from the selection available.

More About This Piece
Chapati boards, traditionally known as chakla in parts of India, have been used in Indian kitchens for generations. Their flat, circular surfaces provide a stable area for rolling out chapatis, rotis and other flatbreads, usually with a wooden rolling pin known as a belan. Many traditional examples have short feet that raise the working surface above the floor or countertop.
These reclaimed boards have thick wooden tops, simple integral-looking feet and plenty of surface wear from previous use. Some are more rounded, while others have slightly irregular edges, darker timber or deeper working marks.
They're particularly useful as small raised platforms around the home. We love them beside the cooker with a bottle of olive oil, salt and pepper, or next to a sink holding soap and a scrubbing brush. They also work well as small plant stands, candle displays or serving boards for bread, cheese and tapas when protected with a suitable food-safe covering.
Condition
Good reclaimed condition with considerable wear from previous use, including scratches, cuts, knocks, surface marks, cracks and variations in the timber. Some boards have uneven edges and irregularities associated with their original construction and age. Please refer to the photographs when choosing your preferred board. As these are reclaimed wooden boards, we recommend using a food-safe covering or separate serving dish rather than placing food directly onto the surface.
Why We Love It
We love finding new uses for simple everyday objects. These little boards are particularly good because the raised feet give them a bit more presence than an ordinary chopping board. They're perfect for gathering all those bottles and bits beside the cooker, and the worn timber looks lovely against ceramics, glass and natural linen.
