Reclaimed Indian Painted Metal Storage tins – Tea, Flour & Rice
Reclaimed Indian Painted Metal Storage tins – Tea, Flour & Rice
Reclaimed Indian metal grain storage tins with hinged flip-top lids, with newer worn painted finishes and bold lettering for tea, flour and rice. Originally made as practical storage containers for grains, these cylindrical metal bins have a wonderfully utilitarian appearance, with ribbed sides, metal catches and plenty of wear from previous use. Available in a range of colours, including deep green, ochre, faded pink, cream and dark brown. Brilliant for storing kindling, household bits, gardening tools or as unique planters. The larger tins would also make excellent floor-standing storage pieces in a utility room. Sold individually, with a choice of colours, sizes and lettering. We recommend using a food-safe liner or separate container if storing food, as they are not suitable for direct contact with food

More About This Piece
Metal storage containers have long been used in Indian homes, shops and kitchens for keeping dry goods such as rice, flour, tea and other provisions. Often made from sheet metal, these practical containers were designed to be sturdy, reusable and easy to open, with fitted lids and simple metal catches.
These reclaimed examples have cylindrical bodies with reinforcing ribs, hinged lids and painted lettering identifying their contents. Their surfaces have acquired plenty of wear, with layers of colour, rust and exposed metal giving each one a slightly different appearance.
They are particularly useful for decorative storage around the home. The smaller examples would work well for keeping household odds and ends together, while the larger bins could hold kindling, rolled papers, umbrellas or gardening equipment. They also make great planters when used with a separate waterproof pot or liner to protect the metal.
We wouldn't recommend using them for direct food storage without a suitable food-safe liner or container.
Condition
Good reclaimed condition with considerable wear from previous use. Expect chipped and flaking paint, rust, scratches, dents, discolouration and exposed metal throughout. The amount of wear varies between bins. Please refer to the photographs for individual finishes and overall condition.
Why We Love It
We love the combination of bold lettering and worn paintwork. The colours are particularly good together, and the different sizes make them useful for all sorts of things. We'd use a large one for kindling beside the fireplace, a smaller one for bits and pieces in the kitchen, or fill one with a big leafy plant.
