A lovely little three-legged wooden stool with bobbin-turned legs, matching turned stretchers and an unusual octagonal top. The previous finish has been stripped back to reveal the pale natural wood, giving the whole piece a much lighter, simpler look while really showing off all that turning. Underneath, the three legs are joined by triangular bobbin bracing, which is perhaps our favourite detail. Small enough to move easily around the house, it works as an occasional stool, beside a chair with a book or drink, or topped with a plant, lamp.

More About This Piece

There’s a surprising amount going on in such a small piece. Each of the three legs has a chunky repeated bobbin turning, but rather than using plain supports underneath, the maker continued the detail across the three stretchers, creating a triangular arrangement of turned wood between the legs.

The thick octagonal top adds another shape into the mix and gives it a slightly less predictable look than a conventional round stool. Stripping away the previous finish has left the wood pale and natural, allowing all of those shapes and details to stand out.

Condition

Good solid used condition with marks, knocks, small imperfections and traces of its previous life remaining. The old finish has been stripped back to reveal the natural pale wood. Please study the photographs as these form part of the condition description.

Why We Love It

It’s the bracing underneath that got us. Three bobbin legs would have been good enough, but carrying the turning through those triangular stretchers makes it so much better. Add the chunky octagonal top and pale stripped finish and there’s a lot to like in a very small stool.
