A substantial French oak sideboard with a parquet top, three-door cupboard, useful central drawer and plenty of storage inside. The old dark finish has been stripped away to reveal the natural pale oak, bringing out the grain and carved detailing, and the parquet top has been sealed with a wax finish. The central cupboard door has an unusual curved front, a particularly good detail that gives the whole piece a softer shape, while carved panels, floral details and scrolling feet run across the front. Original graphite fittings have been retained throughout. Inside, a shelf provides practical storage for crockery, glassware, linens or anything you'd rather keep out of sight, making this equally useful as a dining room sideboard, kitchen storage cupboard or large living room cabinet.

More About This Piece

There is a lot going on with this sideboard, but it’s the curved central door that really sets it apart. Rather than simply sitting flat across the front, the central section projects gently forward, with the drawer above following the same shape. The three cupboard doors are individually shaped and panelled, with carved floral and scroll details continuing across the apron and upper corners.

The original darker finish has been stripped back, completely changing the look of the piece and revealing the much paler oak beneath. We’ve retained the original graphite-coloured hinges, escutcheons and drawer handle, which work particularly well against the newly exposed timber.

The parquet top adds another layer of detail while also providing a large, useful surface for lamps, pottery, artwork or serving. It has been finished with wax to protect the natural oak while retaining its softer appearance.

Condition

Good solid used condition with marks, knocks, imperfections and variations associated with age and previous use. Some fading and a slight mark where the top has worn through. as pictured. The previous finish has been stripped to reveal the natural oak and the parquet top has been sealed with wax. Original graphite-coloured fittings have been retained. Please refer closely to the photographs for the overall condition and finish & take note of dimensions for delivery as this piece is very heavy and does not come apart.

Why We Love It

That curved middle door. It would have been much easier to make the whole front flat, but instead the drawer and central cupboard gently push forward and all the surrounding woodwork follows them. Stripping away the old finish has made those details far easier to see, and the pale oak against the original dark fittings works particularly well.
