Pair of Green Painted French Country House Benches

Long wooden benches have been used in French country houses, farmhouses and communal dining spaces for generations. Often referred to as bancs de ferme, these practical pieces were designed to seat several people around a table or provide additional seating along a wall.

These benches have a particularly simple construction, with long, narrow plank seats, angled supports and a deep wooden apron beneath. The green painted finish gives them a lovely country house feel, with years of wear creating variations in colour and areas where the timber shows through.

Their relatively narrow proportions make them useful in spaces where individual chairs would take up too much room. They would work beautifully either side of a long farmhouse dining table, along a hallway wall or in a boot room. Alternatively, they could be used for displaying collections of pottery, baskets or plants.

Good used condition with wear throughout the green painted finish, including rubbing, scratches, knocks and areas of exposed timber. The surfaces show natural marks and variations associated with previous use. Please refer to the photographs for overall condition.

It's the green paint that makes these for us. The colour has softened beautifully with wear, and the simple shape means they could sit comfortably in almost any country interior. We'd love to see them either side of a long farmhouse table, but they'd look just as good in a hallway with a few baskets tucked underneath.
