A pair of early 20th-century French parlour chairs dating to around 1890–1910, made in the Louis XVI style with fluted tapered legs, carved rosette details and open arms. Both are upholstered in a soft sage green linen fabric with a textured weave, finished with traditional studwork around the seats and rectangular backs. The wooden frames are solid and the seats remain good and firm. The upholstery is in pretty good condition with some wear to the upholstered arms and a little staining to one of the backs. Their compact proportions make them particularly useful for smaller rooms, giving you a proper pair of French armchairs without taking up too much floor space.

More About This Piece

Made around the turn of the 20th century, these chairs take their design from the Louis XVI period rather than being 18th-century examples. The influence can be seen in the straight rectangular backs, fluted tapered legs and small carved rosettes at the corners of the frames. The open arms and compact dimensions give them a lighter feel than many traditional upholstered armchairs, making them particularly good either side of a fireplace, in a bedroom or as occasional seating in a smaller sitting room.

Condition

Good antique condition. Both wooden frames are solid and the upholstered seats remain firm. The sage green linen has some marks and variation from previous use, with visible wear to the upholstered arms. The frames have knocks, scratches and rubbing consistent with their age. Please refer to the photographs for overall condition.

Why We Love It

It's increasingly difficult to find a genuine pair with proportions this useful. They're proper armchairs but without the bulk, and the soft sage linen works really well against the darker wooden frames. We'd put them either side of a fireplace or use them where a pair of larger chairs would simply take over the room.
