Ochre Glazed Jelly Mould

Ceramic moulds like this were traditionally used for setting and turning out jellies, creams and other moulded desserts, with the deeply shaped interior creating the finished pattern once the contents were released. It’s a lovely example of an everyday kitchen object that now looks every bit as good simply sitting on a shelf.

The mould has a strongly fluted interior beneath a broad rounded rim, all covered in a glossy deep ochre glaze. The outside has been left much plainer, giving a good contrast between the two surfaces. Use it as kitchen decor, add it to a collection of old French pottery or bring it back to the table as an unusual serving bowl.

Good used condition with marks and surface wear from age and previous use. There is a small chip to one edge of the rim, visible in the photographs. As with any older pottery intended for modern food use, we would recommend using a liner or keeping it for dry foods unless the glaze has been professionally tested as food safe.

The deep ochre glaze is what makes this one for us. Turn it over and you have that great traditional moulded shape, but sitting this way up it becomes a really good-looking bowl. We’d happily have it piled with lemons on a kitchen table when it isn't being used for serving.
