Original tribal wooden trunk chairs from Nagaland in north-east India, carved from a substantial section of solid timber. These traditional Naga tribal chairs have a wonderfully raw, sculptural form, with a thick seat, tall angled back and chunky legs. The back rises from the seat before sweeping down towards the sides, creating an unusual, almost architectural sculptural form. The timber has a beautifully weathered surface, with visible tool marks, worn edges and variations in colour developed through age and use. A wonderful piece for wabi sabi interiors, where natural materials and irregular forms take centre stage. Equally good as low occasional chairs with a sheepskin thrown over or simply displayed as sculptural historical pieces. Two chairs available individually or as a pair.

More About This Piece

Traditional Naga trunk chairs originate from the tribal communities of Nagaland in north-east India, where large sections of timber were carved into substantial pieces of furniture. These chairs were made using simple tools, with the shape of the timber influencing the finished form. In some Naga communities, particular types of carved wooden seating were associated with village elders and people of standing, although the original use of these particular chairs is not documented.

These are original examples rather than contemporary reproductions. The thick seats, substantial legs and tall, irregular backs retain the directness of their original construction, with visible working marks, natural cracks and weathering across the timber.

Their sculptural forms work particularly well in simple interiors alongside linen, stone, plaster and other natural materials. They would make wonderful occasional chairs in a hallway or bedroom, or could be displayed individually as pieces of traditional tribal furniture.

Two available, each with its own variations in shape and timber.

Condition

Original condition with significant surface wear, natural splits, cracks, tool marks and irregularities throughout the timber. These are part of the chairs age, construction and previous use. Please refer to the photographs for overall condition.

Why We Love It

There's something fantastic about furniture made so directly from a tree trunk. The heavy proportions, uneven surfaces and sculptural backs give these chairs a presence that would be difficult to reproduce. We particularly love the simplicity of the design and how the timber has been allowed to speak for itself.
