A large French Quimper pottery platter with bold hand painted floral decoration in deep blue, soft green, yellow and ochre. The central design is surrounded by a loose floral border and blue painted rim, with visible brushwork and the slight variations you'd expect from hand decoration. A wire plate hanger is already fitted, so it's ready to hang on the wall, but its generous size also makes it a great piece displayed on a dresser, shelf or plate stand. Hand sourced by us in France.

More About This Piece

Quimper pottery comes from Brittany in north-west France and is particularly known for its colourful, hand painted decoration.

This platter has a wonderfully loose floral design rather than the more familiar Breton figure often associated with Quimper. Large blue and yellow flowers fill the centre, surrounded by green foliage and smaller ochre flowers, with the pattern continuing around the edge.

There is lovely age to the surface too, including visible crazing to the glaze and gentle wear around the rim. The existing wire hanger means it can go straight onto a wall and would work particularly well as part of a collection of old French plates and pottery.

Condition

Good used condition with wear consistent with age, including crazing throughout the glaze and some small areas of wear and loss around the rim. The hand painted decoration remains strong and clear. Please study the photographs as these form part of the condition description.

Why We Love It

It's the colours and scale for us. The loose floral painting feels much less formal than some Quimper pieces, and the blue, green and ochre work brilliantly together. Even better, someone has already done the fiddly bit and fitted the hanger.
