Large French Copper Tavern Mug & Measure
Large French Copper Tavern Mug & Measure
A wonderfully oversized French copper vessel sourced in Charente-Maritime, traditionally the sort of piece that could have been used as a practical measure in markets. Its generous cylindrical body has a large curved handle, reinforced copper bands and clearly visible soldered seams from its construction. The copper has been left with its naturally aged surface rather than polished back, giving it rich brown tones with small areas of oxidation. A great piece of French kitchenware to display as it is, or put back to work as a utensil holder or planter.

More About This Piece
Large copper vessels of this form had several practical uses in France. Similar handled tankards were used in country taverns and bistros for regional drinks such as cider, ale and house wine, while cylindrical copper vessels were also made as measures for markets, grocers, kitchens and dairies. Without markings or graduations we can't say exactly which purpose this particular example served, but its substantial construction certainly suggests it was made as a working vessel rather than purely for display.
Condition
Good used condition with knocks, scratches, oxidation, colour variation and marks across the copper. The soldered joints and seams remain clearly visible and form part of the piece's construction. We have deliberately left the copper with its existing surface rather than polishing it back.
Why We Love It
The exaggerated scale is what got us with this one. It looks like a simple copper mug until you realise just how big it is. Add the huge rounded handle, visible seams and unpolished copper and it's a really good piece of French utilitarian kitchenware.
