Large Chinese Rice Wine Storage Jars
Large Chinese Rice Wine Storage Jars
Exceptional decorative Chinese rice wine storage jars dating from 1930s -1940s, sourced from Shanxi province in northern China. Measuring approximately 95cm high and 80cm wide, these substantial glazed pottery vessels have beautifully rounded shoulders and deeply textured surfaces with vertical incised markings beneath a rich dark brown glaze. Traditionally used for storing rice wine, their generous proportions make them exceptional decorative pieces for large interior spaces, courtyards or gardens. Particularly impressive positioned either side of a grand entrance, doorway or gateway, or displayed individually as a focal point. Two available, each with its own variations in glaze and surface.

More About This Piece
Large ceramic storage jars have a long history in China, where substantial vessels were used for storing and transporting liquids and agricultural produce, including fermented rice wine. Their practical shapes typically feature broad bodies, rounded shoulders and relatively narrow openings.
These examples come from Shanxi province and date to the 1940s. The surface is particularly interesting, with closely spaced vertical incised lines running down the body and a dark brown glaze that catches the light across the raised texture. The rounded form gradually narrows towards the base, giving each jar an impressive sculptural presence.
At approximately 95cm high and 80cm wide, these are substantial pieces, suited to larger spaces where their scale can be appreciated. They would work particularly well in a large hallway, orangery, covered courtyard, restaurant or hotel entrance, or as a pair flanking a gateway.
Two jars available.
Condition
Both jars have weathered surfaces, variations in the glaze and marks associated with their age and previous use. Their textured finish and natural colour variations are part of their appeal. Although these jars have spent many years outdoors, we cannot guarantee they are frost-proof. For outdoor use in areas prone to freezing temperatures, we recommend keeping them free of standing water, covering the openings or moving them into shelter during severe frost, or you could add an antifreeze treatment.
Why We Love It
It's the sheer scale of these jars that makes them so impressive. The rounded shoulders, rich brown glaze and heavily textured surface are fantastic, and finding two of this size gives the opportunity to create a really striking entrance. Equally good displayed individually, indoors or out.
