A beautiful hand-thrown ceramic plate by French artist and potter Romauld, whose summer studio on the Île d'Oléron we visit each year. As much a piece of art as a functional plate, it's lovely for serving bread or sharing dishes, but equally deserving of a spot on a shelf or table as a decorative piece. The gently raised rim an expressive mix of painted circles, scattered splashes and flowing glazes in sandy tones, soft blue, ochre and eau de nil. The colours bring to mind the sea, sand and changing coastal landscape surrounding Romauld's island studio, giving this individual piece a wonderful connection to the place where it was made.

More About This Piece

Romauld is an artist and potter working on the French Atlantic island of Île d'Oléron, where we visit his summer studio each year to select pieces for Relish. His pottery combines expressive painted decoration with everyday ceramic forms, blurring the line between functional tableware and art. Each piece has its own arrangement of colour, marks and movement.

Condition

Handmade studio pottery with individual variations in shape, glaze and painted decoration, all part of the making process.

Why We Love It

There's something particularly lovely about knowing the place and person behind a piece. The soft coastal colours and playful painted marks remind us of our visits to Romauld's island studio.
