Inspired by an original antique Normandy duck decoy in our own collection, this decorative wooden decoy has been handmade by Shaun in our South Devon workshop using reclaimed timber. The chunky, pared-back shape has been copied from the old working decoys traditionally found around the French coast, with a deep black finish that has been deliberately worn back to reveal glimpses of the timber beneath. Simple and slightly primitive in form, it’s a brilliant little piece for adding something unexpected to a shelf, mantelpiece or collection of old books and pottery. The reclaimed wood means every duck has its own marks, knocks and variations, so each one Shaun makes will be slightly different.

More About This Piece

We bought the original Normandy decoy some time ago and loved its wonderfully simple form, so Shaun decided to make his own version. Each duck is individually made from reclaimed timber and finished by hand, so no two will be exactly alike. Designed purely as a decorative piece rather than a working decoy, it looks great tucked amongst books and pottery on a shelf, on a mantelpiece or as part of a relaxed coastal interior. This is the first in a series, with more individually made decoys to follow.

Condition

Newly made using reclaimed timber, so knots, marks, previous wear and variations within the wood are all to be expected.

Why We Love It

It all started with an original antique French decoy we bought for ourselves and has now found its way into the Relish collection. We particularly love the simple shape and the fact that every one Shaun makes will come out slightly differently.
