Hand Thrown Sauvage Clay Studio Pottery Vase

This is one of those pieces that's all about the surface. Hand thrown from grey sauvage clay, the vase has been left deliberately irregular, allowing the texture of the clay and the movement from the potter's wheel to remain visible.

The glaze moves between muted moss and grey-green, with areas of darker clay and rusty brown naturally breaking through across the surface. Rather than being smooth and uniform, there are pits, speckles and variations throughout, giving the pot a wonderfully earthy finish.

Its simple rounded body narrows into a very small opening at the top, making it particularly good displayed without flowers. We'd use it as a small sculptural piece amongst old pottery, artwork and books, although a single dried stem would work beautifully too.

Excellent condition. The irregularities, pits, speckling and variations across the surface are inherent to the clay, glaze and firing process rather than damage.

The glaze is particularly good on this one. Up close there's so much going on – mossy green, grey, rust and almost black – yet from a distance it's incredibly simple. It looks just as good completely empty.
