A beautifully thrown hand-painted stoneware bowl featuring a fish design surrounded by leaves and geometric patterns. Perfect as a decorative bowl on a kitchen island, dining table or open shelving. The bowl has a gently flared shape, a raised foot and a warm cream glaze decorated in earthy charcoal and brown tones. Repeating diamond patterns, bold leaves and hand-drawn lines cover both the inside and outside, with a darker glazed rim framing the whole piece. The slightly irregular finish and variations in the decoration give it a lovely handmade feel. Possibly attributed to Keith R. Gilbert a British studio potter working in Hastings, East Sussex, during the 1970s and early 1980s.

More About This Piece

Fish have featured in East Asian pottery decoration for centuries, appearing on everything from everyday bowls to more elaborate ceramic vessels. Chinese Cizhou-type pottery is particularly known for its bold, freely painted designs, including fish and plant motifs, while Okinawan pottery traditions also make extensive use of fish imagery.

This bowl has a particularly interesting combination of decoration. The centre features a stylised fish with prominent eyes and patterned fins, surrounded by sweeping leaf shapes and a repeating diamond design. The pattern continues around the outside, making it attractive from every angle. The decoration is painted in dark brown and charcoal tones against a warm cream background, with a glossy glazed finish and darker bands around the rim and foot. We particularly like the idea of displaying it on a kitchen shelf alongside other collected pottery, or propping it upright on a stand so the fish design can be properly appreciated.

Condition

The photographs show natural variations in the glaze and hand-painted decoration, including small speckles and irregularities in the surface. No obvious major chips or cracks are visible in the supplied photographs, although the underside has not been inspected. As the age and composition of the glaze are unconfirmed, we recommend decorative use rather than direct food contact.

Why We Love It

It's the fish that makes this bowl for us. The drawing is wonderfully bold and slightly quirky, especially against the repeating geometric pattern. We love that the decoration continues around the outside, so there's something to look at whichever way you display it.
