A large French glazed terracotta tian bowl with a wonderfully simple, low form, two small ear handles and a rich warm ochre-brown glaze. These broad earthenware bowls were practical pieces of French kitchen pottery, made for preparing and cooking food rather than simply being put on display. The wide opening and shallow sides made them particularly useful for mixing, preparing ingredients and slow cooking. This is a particularly good example for a rustic kitchen, with plenty of variation through the glaze and signs of its previous use. Today it would make a brilliant large fruit bowl or centrepiece on an old kitchen table.

More About This Piece

The tian has its roots in southern French cooking, particularly Provence, where the name referred originally to the earthenware vessel itself before also becoming associated with food cooked in it. Traditional tians were broad vessels designed for everyday kitchen use, including preparing ingredients, cooking and serving.

Large handled examples were also used for jobs associated with preserving the harvest, including preparing jams and macerating fruit. Their wide shape made ingredients easy to stir and work with, while the glazed surface made the porous terracotta more suitable for wet foods.

We particularly like the simplicity of this one: a broad circular body, substantial rolled rim and two little ear handles, all covered in that deep ochre-brown glaze.

Condition

Good used condition with plenty of evidence of previous use, including surface marks, scratches, glaze wear and firing irregularities. These are all consistent with an older utilitarian piece of French pottery. Please study the photographs as these form part of the condition description.

Why We Love It

This is exactly the sort of old French kitchenware we like finding. Nothing unnecessary — just a big, useful terracotta bowl, two little handles and a really good warm glaze. We'd fill it with apples or pears and put it straight in the middle of a big kitchen table.
