A small collection of German salt-glazed stoneware jugs, sold individually, each with its own shape and freely applied cobalt-blue decoration. Made from grey stoneware with the distinctive blue decoration associated with traditional German salt-glazed pottery, these are simple domestic pieces originally intended for everyday use rather than display. The salt-firing process gives the surface its slightly irregular, softly glazed finish, while the hand-applied blue decoration means no two pieces are quite the same. Choose your preferred jug using the numbered photographs. Each jug is sold individually.

More About This Piece

Blue and grey salt-glazed stoneware has a long history in Germany, particularly around the Westerwald region, where potters became known for hard-fired grey stoneware decorated with cobalt blue beneath a salt glaze. Surviving museum examples show the technique established by the early 17th century, with production continuing through subsequent centuries.

These smaller jugs are much more modest domestic pieces, but it’s that simplicity we like. The first is a taller pitcher with a pinched pouring lip and loose looping blue decoration, while the smaller jug has a rounded body, handle and simple blue decoration.

Today they work just as well away from their original purpose — use one as a little flower jug, on open kitchen shelving, or simply grouped with other old pottery.

Condition

Good used condition with the irregularities, marks and variations expected from older salt-glazed stoneware. Please refer closely to the individual photographs when choosing your jug.

Why We Love It

We buy a lot of old pottery, and these are exactly the sort of pieces we look for. Simple shapes, slightly wonky blue decoration and surfaces that don't look too perfect. They’re small enough to tuck onto a shelf and particularly good mixed in with old French and British pottery.
