French Wooden Coat Rack with Shelf & Decorative Hooks

Hand sourced by us on our latest buying trip to France, this vintage wall-mounted rack has a wonderfully traditional French feel.

The wooden back has a scalloped lower edge and is fitted with five ornate metal double hooks, giving plenty of room for coats, jackets, hats, scarves or bags. Above sits a deep wooden shelf – useful for baskets and everyday bits in a hallway, or for displaying pottery, pictures and favourite finds.

We particularly like the hooks. Their decorative backplates give the rack a little more detail than the usual simple peg rails, while the warm wood keeps it relaxed and easy to live with.

A great addition to an entrance hall or boot room, but equally useful in a kitchen for aprons and tea towels or in a bedroom for clothes and accessories.

Good vintage condition with age-related marks, knocks and variations to the wood and metalwork from previous use. These have been retained rather than over-restoring the piece.

It's the combination of the shelf and those pretty old hooks that sold this one to us. There's plenty of hanging space below and enough room above for a row of baskets, pottery or a favourite picture – practical storage that doesn't need to be hidden away.
