Earthenware Cooking Pot with Ear Handles
Earthenware Cooking Pot with Ear Handles
A substantial French earthenware original cooking pot with a wide open form, rounded sides and two small ear handles. The exterior has been left largely unglazed in earthy brown tones, contrasting with the pale grey glazed interior which has developed a lovely crackled surface. Originally made as a practical piece of French kitchen pottery, its low, generous proportions make it particularly good repurposed as a large fruit bowl or for displaying produce on a kitchen table.

More About This Piece
This is a great example of traditional French utilitarian pottery, made with a broad opening and small opposing ear handles for lifting. The contrast between the earthy unglazed exterior and pale glazed interior is particularly good, with fine crazing across the glaze showing its previous use. While originally intended for the kitchen, the shape translates brilliantly into a fruit or vegetable bowl today.
Condition
Good condition with wear consistent with previous use, including marks, surface variation and some rubbing to the earthenware. The pale grey interior glaze has extensive fine crazing and some staining. Due to its age and the unknown composition of the original glaze, we would recommend using it for whole fruit or decorative purposes rather than direct food preparation.
Why We Love It
It's such a simple, useful shape. The little ear handles are particularly good, and we love the difference between the earthy brown exterior and crackled pale grey interior. Filled with figs, apples or pears, it makes a brilliant kitchen table centrepiece.
