Bristol Glaze Stoneware Kitchen Jars
Bristol Glaze Stoneware Kitchen Jars
Traditional Bristol glaze stoneware jars and pots, finished in the familiar combination of pale cream and warm honey-brown glaze. The collection includes two substantial storage jars and a smaller rounded pot with a matching lid. The larger handled jar has a wide opening, small side handles and simple incised bands around the shoulder, making it perfect for holding kitchen utensils, or displaying a leafy plant. The second jar has a fuller, rounded shape and thick rolled rim, ideal for dried flowers on open kitchen shelving. The smaller lidded pot is a lovely size for sugar or salt. Traditionally used for household and commercial storage, Bristol glazed stoneware is wonderfully simple, with natural variations in the glaze

More About This Piece
Bristol glaze was developed in England during the 1830s and became widely used throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. Its smooth, hard surface made it particularly suitable for practical stoneware containers, including storage jars, bottles and pots used by households and commercial producers. The familiar two-tone finish was achieved by combining pale Bristol glaze with a darker brown glaze on the upper section.
These three pieces are good examples of the traditional finish, with slightly different shapes suited to different uses. The larger jars would be excellent for wooden spoons, rolling pins, dried flowers or plants, while the smaller lidded pot is ideal for cotton buds, bathroom essentials or other small household items.
The glaze has natural variations in colour and finish, with the honey-brown upper sections providing a lovely contrast against the pale cream bodies.
Condition
Good used condition with surface marks, glaze variations, small firing imperfections and signs of previous use. Please refer to the photographs for individual condition.
As these are older stoneware pieces, we cannot confirm that the glazes meet modern food-contact standards. We recommend using a suitable food-safe liner or separate container for storing sugar, salt or other foodstuffs.
Why We Love It
We've always liked Bristol glazed pottery. The combination of honey-brown and cream is so recognisable, and these pieces are genuinely useful around the home. The two larger jars are particularly good for kitchen utensils, while the little lidded pot would be lovely on a bathroom shelf.
