Antique French mill baskets, available individually and in exceptional condition for their age. These large open wicker baskets were made as practical working pieces, with a strong rectangular form, closely woven base and rim, and original wooden rails to the base. Their generous proportions make them incredibly useful around the home today — fill one with logs beside the fire, use it for blankets in a sitting room or as good-looking toy storage that you don't need to hide away. We have two available, each with its own individual wear and variations, so simply choose your preferred basket.

More About This Piece

Originally made as working baskets rather than household decoration, mill baskets needed to be substantial enough for regular handling while remaining relatively lightweight and easy to move. The open wicker construction gives these a particularly good shape, with the more densely woven base and upper rim adding strength where it is needed.

We have two available, both sourced in France. They work particularly well as fireside log baskets, but their size also makes them useful for blankets, cushions, children's toys or general storage.

Condition

Exceptional condition for their age. Both remain strong and very usable, although there is wear, marking, colour variation and some losses to the wicker as you would expect from antique working baskets. Each differs slightly in condition and appearance. Please study the individual photographs and choose your preferred basket.

Big old baskets are some of the most useful things we bring back from France. These have a great open weave, lovely natural colour and enough size to actually hold a decent pile of logs or blankets. Best of all, they're storage you don't have to hide.
