A beautiful old French enamel milk jug, over 100 years old and in exceptional condition for its age. The tall traditional form has a generous pouring spout and large curved handle, finished in an unusual green and white marbled enamel with a dark rim. Originally an everyday household vessel used for carrying and serving milk, it’s the sort of practical French kitchenware that now looks just as good simply displayed. The fresh green colouring is particularly striking. Use it today as a large jug for flowers and branches or in your potting shed for watering

More About This Piece

Enamelware became a mainstay of European kitchens during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, providing a hard-wearing and easily cleaned surface for everyday household vessels. Large handled jugs like this were used for carrying, storing and serving liquids including milk and water.

What sets this one apart is its finish. Rather than the more familiar plain white or blue enamel, the surface has a loose green and white marbled pattern running across the entire body and handle. At more than 100 years old, it has also survived remarkably well, particularly considering that these were made to be used rather than kept for display.

Condition

Exceptional condition for its age. There are minor signs of wear, small marks and areas of enamel loss consistent with a piece of French enamelware over 100 years old, but overall it has survived remarkably well. Please study the photographs as these form part of the condition description.

Why We Love It

The green marbled finish is brilliant and not something we come across very often. Add the exaggerated handle, tall shape and the fact that it has survived more than a century in this condition and it was an easy one for us. We'd fill it with a big bunch of garden flowers or a few oversized branches.
