A superb quality antique French chest of drawers, made from solid oak with four generous full-width drawers, a cleverly concealed fifth drawer and handsome turned column detailing to either side. A substantial, beautifully made piece with a lovely warm oak finish, original locks and key and simple antique brass handles. Exceptionally solid and heavy, with the sort of construction and proportions that make this a particularly good bedroom or living room piece for a statement. Circa 1880-1910

Hand sourced by us in France, this is a particularly good example of a traditional French commode or chest of drawers, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century.

The chest is constructed in solid oak throughout, with four large graduated drawers providing plenty of useful storage. Above these sits a shallow fifth drawer, cleverly incorporated into the upper frieze so that it almost disappears when closed.

Turned columns flank the drawer fronts, giving the chest a strong architectural look without making it overly ornate. The oak itself is particularly attractive, with plenty of visible grain across the wide drawer fronts and top.

The original locks and key remain, while understated antique brass button handles work beautifully against the warm colour of the timber.

This is a genuinely substantial piece of French furniture – solid, heavy and exceptionally well made – and would work particularly well as a bedroom chest, linen chest or additional storage in a large landing or dressing room.

Condition

Very good antique condition and structurally solid. There is wear, marking and variation to the oak consistent with its age and previous use. The top has some areas of historic marking and minor damage, which can be seen in our detailed photographs. We have deliberately retained these rather than over-restoring the piece.

It's the quality that really sets this chest apart. The heavy solid oak construction, column sides and beautifully figured drawer fronts give it presence, while the hidden top drawer is a brilliant little detail. A really good piece of old French furniture with masses of useful storage.
