A Coastal Countryside Retreat Designed For Relaxed Holiday Living
Nestled in the heart of the South Hams, Stancombe Cottage is a beautifully restored four-bedroom holiday let designed to embrace the surrounding countryside and offer guests a calm, welcoming place to unwind.
The property already had incredible potential — with its stone exterior, spacious interiors, and stunning rural views — but it needed cosmetic renovation and thoughtful modernisation to truly make the most of the space and location.
Our role was to help transform the cottage into a warm, timeless holiday home that balanced comfort, practicality, and understated coastal-inspired interiors.
Creating A Calm & Contemporary Holiday Home
The brief was centred around creating a relaxed, inviting environment that would appeal to families, couples, and groups visiting the South Hams throughout the year.
Using a palette of soft neutrals, muted blues, sage greens, natural oak tones, and layered textures, we introduced warmth and character while keeping the interiors feeling light and uncluttered. Every room was designed to feel calm, comfortable, and connected to the surrounding landscape — allowing the countryside views and natural light to become a key part of the overall experience.
Thoughtful Design Throughout Every Space
From the large open-plan living areas to the individual bedrooms, every element of the project was carefully considered to ensure the property felt cohesive yet relaxed.
The spacious living room was designed with oversized comfortable seating, soft layered textiles, and natural materials to create an easy-going social space perfect for holiday living.
In the bedrooms, we introduced feature panelling, bespoke soft furnishings, patterned fabrics, and calming colour palettes to give each room its own personality while maintaining a consistent feel throughout the cottage.
Touches of navy, sea blue, sage, and soft stone tones subtly reference the coastal surroundings without becoming overly themed.
Designed For Practical Holiday Living
As with all successful holiday accommodation projects, durability and practicality were just as important as aesthetics. All products, including wall and floor finishes, were supplied by Relish to ensure the interiors not only looked beautiful but also performed well for regular guest use.
Hardwearing flooring, layered upholstery fabrics, practical furniture choices, and easy-flow layouts were all selected with longevity and guest comfort in mind. The result is a home that feels both elevated and approachable — stylish enough to feel special, yet robust enough for everyday holiday living.
Celebrating The South Hams Landscape
One of the strongest features of Stancombe Cottage is its connection to the surrounding countryside. Large windows, open-plan spaces, and soft natural tones help blur the line between indoors and out, allowing the landscape to remain at the centre of the experience.
Whether enjoying the views from the terrace, relaxing in the living spaces, or waking up in one of the calm, layered bedrooms, the interiors were designed to complement rather than compete with the setting.

Rather than following short-lived trends, the design approach focused on creating a timeless, relaxed atmosphere that guests would instantly feel comfortable in.
Natural textures, classic furniture shapes, subtle patterns, and layered fabrics all work together to create interiors that feel welcoming, lived-in, and easy to enjoy year after year. The finished result is a holiday home that feels thoughtfully designed without ever feeling overdone.
