A little more about Burmese Puppet Heads
Originating from Burma, also known as Myanmar. Our hand-carved puppet heads have their origins steeped in history; the traditional carvings were prominent during the 15th century and were used for entertainment as well as to preserve the country's history and religion. The examples we are offering for sale are believed to date back to the early 20th century.
Yamane wood was the traditional choice for the craftsmen who created these hand carved heads. It was favoured for its lightness and for the ease with which it could be carved. In more recent times, Teak has also been used as it is abundant in the region. The intricate carvings were often decorated with several layers of paint, and glass eyes were frequently added.
Although some heads were created to stand alone as decorative pieces to be traded with tourists to the region, more often than not, they would have been connected to bodies using carefully crafted joints and strings, which would allow for a wide range of movements. Some of our examples have articulated mouths and tongues.
Similar examples are still used to this day in performances which are used to preserve the traditional carving methods as well as to introduce Burmese puppetry to new audiences.
We have been lucky enough to purchase a wide range of Burmese puppet heads and are pleased to offer them for sale. We have painted and unpainted examples some are simple and naive in their design whilst others are more intricately carved. All offer the chance to own a unique piece of history from this fascinating country.
