HOW TO STYLE NORTH FACING OR DARK ROOMS

HOW TO STYLE NORTH FACING OR DARK ROOMS

BE BOLD -

The first thought for many is to go for light pale colours, which ends up leaving your interior feeling cold and lacking in style. Instead go bold with your colour choices with deep tones, which will eliminate shadows and push your walls out

WARM TONES -

Choose rich greens, earthy oranges and peachy pinks, that will add warmth to your room

TEXTURE & PATTERN -

Its so easy to make a north facing room feel flat. add texture and pattern in fabrics to lift the mood and rustic woods, gilt and brass finishes for a layered finish. More is more and bigger is better in this case

FLOORING -

A great way to make a space feel bigger and lighter is to pale down your flooring. The natural light from windows will bounce off this and highlight elements in your room. Add rugs to wooden floors to soften

LIGHTING -

This is the most important element for transforming dark rooms. lighting by itself can change a space from drab to fab and is a great way to add pattern and warmth to a scheme within shades. antique brass / bronze fittings will give some relief from a deep wall colour. Again this is an element where you need to go big, bold and lots of it. Think about lighting in 3 layers:
Top - large ceiling pendants throw overhead light for detailed working in kitchens
Middle - wall lights and standard lamps are great for dining and living rooms
Bottom - table lamps add soft cosy lighting for the evenings

Thank you Relish for such useful professional tips. I have a north facing kitchen which tends to be be dark and cold. So the walls and ceiling is white and boring!! Reading your tips I think I could go for two walls in a warm grey and add a coloured blind?
